The Africa Champions Cup will be held in Maputo, Mozambique from December 9 to December 17
Reigning Kenya Women’s Premier League champions Kenya Ports Authority are set to make an appearance in the 2022 Africa Champions Cup next month, FIBA Africa confirmed over the weekend.
The women’s club tournament is making a return in Africa for the first time since 2019, a two year hiatus brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event is penciled to take place from December 9 to December 17 2022 in Maputo, Mozambique, same venue for the 2016 and 2018 championships and third time in the last decade.
KPA in October participated in the FIBA Africa Zone Five championships, finishing second thanks to a 78-67 finals defeat to debutants Sporting Alexandria Club (ASC) of Egypt at the Benjamin Mkapa Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The 16 time WPL champions also dispatched Armee Patriotique Du Rwanda (APR) in the semifinals, obliterating them 61-39 after three group stage victories over Young Sister (Burundi), Rwanda Energy Group (REG) and Vijana Queens (Tanzania).
The Anthony Ojukwu led side last took part in the championships in 2018, with their best finish coming a year ago in Luanda, Angola when they came out fifth in a 12 team tournament.
The other participants in this year’s competition include the reigning champions Ferroviario De Maputo, winners of the 2019 leg after a 91-90 overtime victory over Angolan side Inter Clube de Luanda. The latter will also be in this year’s competition.
Other sides expecting to grace the week-long championships include host side Costa do Sol, AS Ville Dakar (Senegal), Energie BBC (Benin), Overdose Up Station (Cameroon), ASB CNSS (DR Congo), Sporting Club Alexandria (Egypt) and wild card side Armee Patriotique du Rwanda (Rwanda).
